Robert Rauschenberg

Funny, as a teenager I thought this was total bullshit. I saw some of his work in the flesh this year and was really into it.

Collabo Xmas

I did a loose sketch and my son coloured it in and added a whole load of princesses. Merry Chrimboids and a Haurpy Noo Yeaar.

Cat and Ladyfriend

A jumble of techniques, I tried out drawing some things like the hair on a different layer so the highlights were easier to colour.

Taped. Revised

Texture experiment. I accidentally pasted a new texture layer in and thought it looked better with the white troosers.
Original version. Remixed version.

Here's the finished version. Oil and acrylic.

Golden WIP

I've been slowly getting work completed for two upcoming Xmas group shows, this is a detail of an oil painting. Still a bit rusty but getting into it.

Broken Outlines

Playing with outline breaking to create some sort of pattern. I need to mix it with characters I think, but I kindo like it as it is.

Sweeping on

"Streetsweepers, what the f**k would you want to draw them for?"
A line used by my Da' when viewing a painting of mine many years ago.

Circles doodle session.

This is kind of an idea for a background gone wobbly. A fair mix of things went into it.

Dragonfly Mural

Just finished a small set of mini-murals at Dragonfly Cocktail Bar in Edinburgh, these are the bigger of the paintings and the most detailed, was good to try out the style on a bigger scale with acrylics. It was a slight update on the mural I painted there in 2005, commissioned by Red Bull.

The Captain

...and his whiskers.
Old sheet music cover, found a few treasure troves of these.
Wonder what type of bike he rode?

Wow, been actually drawing. This is a watercolour fill pen drawn lines thing I've been doing lately. With some digital collagey stuff too.

Ganghuts part 2

Got one coat of paint on, need to put better walls on in the inside and another window, then tidy up the wood outside add a few wee bits and it's painting time. Will post up some photos when the whole thing is done.

Tiny Hoose on Wheels

Whilst looking for a shed/studio type help video, I found this short clip of Jenine Alexander and Amy Hutto building a tiny little house. It's like ganghut building by grown ups, (well, grown ups that can actually build). They have a blog where they post up the progress of various projects and also there is more information on their site.
I nearly finished building the ganghut I started to build for my son, got the roof felted and just need to put walls on the inside and paint it before I stick up some photos. I think I am more excited about it than my son.

Nice slides

In the summer my and I were over in Nice for a good friends wedding, whilst we were there I took a bunch of daft photos, I've been trying to think of a way to show all the typo-signage, building stuff that I photograph for a while, usually it's taken as reference for fonts I'll never make, so at least now it's out there. Click the pic to go see the photos.
UPDATE - You can also access the photos via this page where I will add more photosets.

Oil on water

This is the first bit of painting in a while, well the background at least! I tried out a technique of putting down some strokes of Vegetable oil on painted card and then adding some layers of watered down acrylic, the results were the background of this drawing, just wiping it back now and again I was able to keep adding texture.
I'd like to try it on a bigger scale to see if it works, but just need to work a way of not using my cooking oil.

Dream doodle.

first bit of drawage in ages, at least not connected to animated stuff. It was super loose then had a bit of a play in photoshoppe.

Been learning animation (HD) n that.

For the last few weeks I've been working on some animation stuff, a mixture of Cinema 4D and After Effects. The last time I did animation, or mor like motion graphics was a long time ago so a lot has changed.
This animation was a test to see if how to export C4D to After Effects and keep the 3d motion, which is shown by the moving text.
I'll post some new drawings soon too.

VNA Interview

I recently did an interview with VNA and the magazine is now oot. More info on their Blog.
Pretty good to been on the cover line-up, can't wait to see the magazine.

'I'm New Here' - Gil Scott Heron - RIP.

"Turnaround turnaround turnaround,
And you may come full circle,
And be new here again"
When I ever made it to Motherfunk on a tuesday many moons ago, 'The Bottle' was always on request if it didn't get played. Such a upbeat tune about alcohol abuse.
On par with Bill Withers 'Better Off Dead'.

Always liked his lyrics too, like this one from Winter in America.
"Yes, and you was out there on the corner
When being cool went blind."
Rest up some.

Crackled XP Blue

I've been learning Cinema 4d, here's a test render from a quick animation I made.

Nasty P - Intense Impressions

Years ago I used to work a cleaning job in a hospital, the guy who'd got me it was Nasty P, who also was living large emptying the rubbish at the same place. He was saving up to get Technics, a task that seemed impossible as they cost so much.

The other night I was watching MTV, which I never usually have on and I was surprised to hear a tune I actually liked, then as I looked closer there was Profisee and Nasty standing with Akil from Jurassic 5. Bonus.

I know have an artist page on Facebook. link here.
I've been trying to do one of those photos that people do where they make themselves look really slim and 10 years younger so I can put it on as a profile pic. There won't be much of that really, just most of the same stuff that's on here except it'll be totally on Facebook and obviously much more exciting.

1133 - Opened

Click photo for Facebook images
The show at Recoat opened on Friday, the turn out was good and folk got pretty merry, there are numerous photos on the Recoat Flickr and Facebook set.
As ever the Recoat gang went all out on looking after me with Philly suppers and a lot of caffeinated drinks to keep us going through the nights. Cheers to everyone who made it out to check out my scribbles.

I'm planning on making a print and zine for a small event in the final week of the show, possibly with a talk, but that is still in the planning process.

The individual work will be online for sale here on Recoat's Shop.

Things done Change

More doodles, was trying to do some drawings of the Bigmeister, gotto get some better reference.

Friday, April 01, 2011

Been good to use a pencil, but have been finding the paintbrush a lot better these days and any sort of shading makes my hands ache like a metherfinker.

In progress

Been working on this the last day or so and a bit.

L'Ennui - 2005

This is the illustration I did in the C215 blue book, can't believe it was 2005 when this came out. It's apparently still available here. It was quite mad for me being in that book with so many artists I was inspired by at the time.

Let downs, don't let up...

Opposite of 'winning'.

Saturday, March 26, 2011

My site has been transferring over to the new server today.
So far it's worked okay, few issues to fix and my emails may be down of for a while.
Will post an update when all issues are fixed.
UPDATE: All appears to be running ok.

Mr. Bilbo Baggins

I've been scanning in some old drawings from primary school, so here's a out of proportion Bilbo drawing from 1985, for some reason he appears to be a giant, not a hobbit. Saw some photos of the set from The Hobbit film the other day, gonna be bingo.

This is the alt flyer, with a radio-op on it.

1133 - Image

Here's the idea for the flyer. Still needs a bit to finish, but it's nearly there.
The painting is a Sharpie sketch with acrylic overpaint base, then details added in gouache and watercolour.

1133 - Recoat April

I've been pretty slack with getting this out. Next month, pretty much a month from now. I have an exhibition at Recoat in Glasgow. it's called 1133, I'd like to to pretend it's for some deep and meaningful reason but really it's because it's 2011 and am now aged 33. There is a tune called 'Falling Down Blues' by Furry Lewis that was a B side on release 1133 from Vocalion and I was going to call the show that, but it's a bit wino.

So it will be a mix of small scale gouache paintings, a little bit of wall painting, photography and some crude attempts at sculpture. I hope to have a small zine for sale too with sketches in, a bit like the BW book I did a while back. Possibly I'll do some limited edition prints, but that really depends on how much painting I get done between now and then, I still have a fair amount to go!

I'll post up some more info over the next week or so. Free Booze obviously.

Click image to go to shop.

It's sold noo.
Also I've been updating all the labels in the archive, all done now. there's a lot of missing images to find though.

Sunday, March 13, 2011

Tidied up a bit. Found loads of old pens and paint. I have a show coming up at Recoat next month so will post details very soon. The show they have on at the moment raised the bar a fair bit, if you get the chance get doon there!

Analogue Books moved to a new Shoppe

Analogue Books moved to a new Location, not far from the old place, infact less than a minutes walk, so go check it ooot and feast yer eyeballs on the books and zines they have. Or visit their fancy online store.

The Legend of the Dragon Smashers

Gouache/Watercolour. View linework here.
This is an idea I had a while back to make a swords and sorcery adventure story about a group of 3 friends who go on a quest to kill a dragon to steal it's gold. Simple enough, but I hoped to tell it in a 3 panel strip format like newspaper style, so it would be quite slow.
I've been trying to do some comics on and off for about a year and it's really hard to get into, so I thought this would be good training to start me off. I'd get the Fonts better and make it pretty much 2 colour so it was quick to do and release weekly.

Sculpt basic - Stage 1

I've played about with some cardboard things like in the past, but this is a small test I made to hopefully make some more bigger ones. The arms and head can move a bit, unlike the one's I've made beforet.
My mate Bernie has a proper table saw so maybe we can get down to more detailed looking bits in a while.

Stricly Biz

I made a stamp of my logo a while back and needed to make business cards because I go to a lot of high powered meetings with oil tycoons and investment thieves in the big city. They are quadruple matt laminated on 400gsm oak with Spot UV and Process and cost £9000 for 100.

I figured if I could draw them and then stamp the details on the back it would be easier getting them printed. I could only find a blue ink for the stamp that looked too bright so i painted over it a bit.

That diamond mine isn't going to buy itself.

Broom Broom

Using some of the textures I've been making lately, quick colouring and quite rough, but I'm happy enough with it.

Redbull Stereopticon - Live Paint

I'll be doing some live painting this thursday in Edinburgh for Red Bull as part of their Stereopticon nights. The painting will be projected onto the McEwan Hall which should be pretty mad.

It will be on from
