Been working on some pilots again, but have been getting some good reference. Found this one of a MIG pilot ejecting. The colours are great, appparently your spinal cord shrinks one and a half inches on ejecting, oooooyah.
Also watched a mad short film about Captain Joe Kittinger's insane skydive from a couple of layers of atmosphere below outer space. It's pretty mental, have a look...
Here's a doodle I did in between, with a chunky pencil for the helmet
Click for full size Found this the other day, apparently Bakshi had ripped off Bode with these characters in this film, they still influenced a lot of writers though. Bakshi's cartoons are amazing. There is talk of Noc 167 being around in his studio, also that it wasn't so much as ripping Bode off as him being a bit of a flake, who knows.
Click to view full drawing. Some soldiers retreating in a fictional war with fictional reasons for killing. Been trying to do more compositional drawings with more than one character in and also do backgrounds properly. I tried to do this one so that the guy at the front who'd just shot down the attacker, is reassuring the guy in front of him and the other soldiers are reacting to what's happened. I just notice that the shooter is in a 1990's rap film gun pose, where the gun is lifted high up, remember those movies? Watched Casshern last night, had thought it was going to be nonsense, it was pretty good, but really long. It did hammer home the message that human beings will find any excuse to destroy each other no matter what, it's what we're good at though isn't it?
Been working on a lot of sketches for the show at Recoat Gallery in March. I'll post the flyer soon with the exact dates. The paintings I've been doing lately have a lot of bitumen and white spirits on them, hence the title, not that I've been consuming lots of vodka and covering myself in bitumen. Apparently hot bitumen was used as mortar in the walls of Babylon.
